About Drum & Lace

Drum & Lace, aka Sofia degli Alessandri-Hultquist, is an artist and composer from Florence, Italy. Her music has been described as being genre-fluid and having a "chameleon-like nature" (A Closer Listen), melding together sampled field recordings, lush layers of synths, chamber instruments and electronic beats. She draws inspiration from film music, music concrete and nature to create textural electronica, often blending unlikely sounds with one another.

Drum & Lace’s background, both in scoring and band worlds, have lead her to composing music for film/tv, as well as for dance, theater, and other mixed media. Drum & Lace’s film releases in 2023 include LGBTQ+ feature romantic comedy ‘Red White & Royal Blue’ for Amazon Studios, and Lionsgate horror film ‘Cobweb’, directed by Samuel Bodin (Netflix’s Marianne). Other notable film/tv work includes AppleTV+ Original Series ‘Dickinson’, 20th Century Studios’ period-comedy ‘Rosaline’’, NBC’s ‘Good Girls’ and ‘Summering’ (Sundance 2022).

In 2022, Drum & Lace released her debut LP Natura on ambient vinyl label Past Inside the Present, which features appearances from the London Contemporary Orchestra (LCO) and Italian drummer Valentina Magaletti. This marked her first LP after a string of EPs, singles and soundtrack releases in previous years under the Drum & Lace moniker. Her most recent release, Frost EP, is a collection of ambient works that explore the use of voice and electronic textures to create hypnotic and soothing soundscapes.

Drum & Lace’s live performances often feature audio-visual or spatial sound elements, which reflect her interest in the intersection of music and technology. She has shared the stage with the likes of Suzanne Ciani, Sqürl, Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith, Shirley Manson (Garbage), William Basinksi, Hans-Joachim Roedelius and Black Midi, and has performed at venues and festivals such as Moog Fest, Slingshot, National Sawdust Discovery Festival, EartH Hackney, Cafe OTO and Festa Dell’Opera (Brescia, Italy).

Drum & Lace is currently based in London, UK and is finishing up her 2nd LP, due out in 2024.
