About ‘Further’

'Further' EP is a new work for contemporary dance in six movements, written for string ensemble and electronics, that explores natural habitats and birdcall from a musical perspective.

With it's titled originally inspired by the Emily Dickinson poem “Further In Summer Than the Birds”, ‘Further’ makes use of ambient noise and field recordings from Yellowstone National Park and other California Parks. With a particular focus on birdsong and birdcall, these recordings are used to give us insight into a day from a bird’s point of view.

Further’ is meant to bring awareness to natural sound, as well as to our world’s changing sonic landscape.

Composed for strings (performed by the London Contemporary Orchestra), analog synthesizers, drum machines, manipulated speech and voice.

About Drum & Lace

Drum & Lace is an Italian composer and performer that creates music for film/tv and media.

Inspired by interesting sounds and cinematic elements, Drum & Lace melds together sampled field recordings and lush layers of synths to create densely textural and beat-heavy music, greatly drawing from film music, music concrete and modern electronica. Her ambient and chamber work also gathers great inspiration from nature and natural sound, as well as the juxtaposition of unlikely sounds with one another.

Her composition work includes writing for film, tv, dance, theater, fashion and advertising.

Drum & Lace's performance work often includes sound installation and spatial audio elements, at events such as Moogfest 2019 (Durham, NC) and at quadraphonic interactive performance at Los Angeles Central Library's Taper Auditorium with Suzanne Ciani (Los Angeles, CA).

Drum & Lace is currently based in Los Angeles, CA

Further in summer than the birds

by Emily Dickinson

Further in Summer than the Birds -
Pathetic from the Grass -
A Minor Nation celebrates
It's unobtrusive Mass -

No Ordinance be seen -
So gradual the Grace
A pensive Custom it becomes
Enlarging Loneliness -

'Tis Audiblest, at Dusk -
When Day's attempt is done -
And Nature nothing waits to do
But terminate in Tune -

Nor difference it knows
Of Cadence, or of Pause -
But simultaneous as Same -
The Service emphacize -

Nor know I when it cease -
At Candles, it is here -
When Sunrise is - that it is not -
Than this, I know no more -

The Earth has many keys -
Where Melody is not
Is the Unknown Peninsula -
Beauty - is Nature's Fact -

But Witness for Her Land -
And Witness for Her Sea -
The Cricket is Her utmost
Of Elegy, to Me -
